Diatomaceous Earth

Posted by goldenacresranch on August 22, 2009 at 8:53 PM

We are posting information about Diatomaceous Earth on the site. Mom has been told that it is not available in the Tallahassee area, but Golden Acres stocks 50# bags for sale.

Diatomaceus Earth, also known as Fossil Shell Flour, is made up of the fossilized remains of ancient diatoms, silica-encased algae. The many photographs of these microscopic cellular organisms are quite beautiful.

The flour is mined in only a few parts of the world, some where oceans used to be and some where freshwater lakes used to be. It is largely used as an organic, mechanical pest control. Apparently it works by scraping the protective layer off of insects and their larvae.

What we sell is the food grade, freshwater type that has not been treated in any way.The treated, industrial versions are used for filtration, such as for pool filters.

Many people put it in with their animal feed. It keeps the intestines free of harmful organisms and mechanically clean. And when it is eliminated, the animal droppings reduce the number of flies and other insects in the pasture.

It can even be used by humans on a daily basis. I'll let you know how it goes.
